Hillersden – Riesling 2016
We love Riesling at Hillersden. It is one of those wines that can tell a story about where it was grown. Ours is inspired by the best – achieving that delightful balance of acid and natural sugar while packing the freshest aromas and flavours New Zealand has to offer.
Pure, brisk and complex. Delivering mouth-watering lime and green apple fruit, lavender, and white flowers with distinct minerality. Dry in style, balanced with a touch of citrus sweetness on the finish.
Our Riesling is grown on the lowest terrace of our vineyard – right on level with the Wairau River. Geisenheim clone 110. The cold nights and gravel soils with pockets of sand and loam help us grow Riesling brimming with complexity, personality and elegance. The extra UV from the New Zealand sun results in a unique chemical profile for our Riesling grapes.
2016 was a very good vintage for our Riesling. A sunny March gave way to a hot April with only a few rain events. Yields were good – offset by a slightly irregular flowering. We picked in the cool of the morning. Pressed, settled, inoculated and bottled, our Riesling saw very little manipulation in the winery. Fermentation was stopped short for some natural sweetness to balance the acidity. Incredibly aromatic and beautifully crisp.
