Hillersden – Riesling 2015
We love Riesling at Hillersden. It is one of those wines that can tell a story about where it was grown. Ours is inspired by the best – achieving that delightful balance of acid and natural sugar while packing the freshest aromas and flavours New Zealand has to offer.
Bright, vibrant citrus notes burst onto the scene with delicate green apple undertones and just a hint of honeysuckle. The aromatics are precise, poised, and ever so slightly flinty. A salute to the ancient riverbeds these vines are farmed on. Juicy flavours of lemon and lime dance across the palate with a classic Riesling zing to finish. Bursting with flavour and personality, this wine should be enjoyed chilled.
The lower terrace of our vineyard is where we have planted our Riesling. The cold nights and gravel soil help us grow Riesling brimming with complexity, personality, and elegance. The extra UV from the New Zealand sun results in a unique chemical profile for our Riesling grapes. It is a project of passion and the higher moisture we get during the growing season makes it challenging to fight the pressure from another lover of Riesling – botrytis. But all the work is worth it for wine this good.
The fruit was carefully picked to avoid botrytis and taken to the winery where it was fermented in 100% stainless steel. This Riesling is a dryer style reminiscent of the world-famous Mosel region. The ferment was stopped with just enough residual sugar to balance out the racy acidity, leaving a delightfully balanced wine. Ready to drink now but would suit aging as well.
